Listed as Special Concern in Michigan. Typically grows near streams and rivers. It will tolerate mesic soil, but might require supplemental water during dry periods. The flowers are spectacular and large (6"+ across). Primarily attracts bees to the flowers. Host plant for many species including: Gray Hairstreak (Strymon melinus), Checkered Skipper (Pyrgus communis), Painted Lady(Vanessa cardui) Pearly Wood Nymph (Eudryas unio). Also quite palatable to mammals.
